Smart homes and data privacy

Rumba Robots may not be as innocent as they look...

These robotic vacuums clean autonomously, adapting their suction to different surfaces and learning as they go.

They are pretty smart, however there are some concerns about the way they handle data. For example, the robot's sensors collect data allowing it to develop a full map of your home.

This could reveal a wealth of information about you. Home size could give an indication of income; and there are even concerns that the built in camera could be used to pick up certain features, for example damaged furniture.

I Robot who make Rumba do not currently share this data, but in the past they have suggested this data could be shared with Amazon or Google.

Imagine being a marketer and knowing what brands people bought or if an old sofa needed to be replaced!

While this data remains private for now, this example illustrates the confusion and concern surrounding smart home appliances and their implications for data privacy.

So keep an eye on your smart home appliances- they may not be as benign as you think!
